You’ll learn how to use iNaturalist, a free app that turns your phone into a biodiversity logbook. We’ll walk the trails at the beautiful Laurelville Retreat Center and show you how to capture and identify local species—from trees and insects to amphibians and invasive plants. Each entry becomes part of a global database that helps scientists and communities track ecological trends. Don’t worry if you’ve never used it before—this workshop is beginner-friendly, and we’ll help get you up and running.
After that, we’ll head to the stream to get our feet wet—literally. Using boots, nets, and buckets, participants will explore stream macroinvertebrates, the tiny aquatic creatures that help indicate the health of our waterways. From mayfly nymphs to caddisfly larvae, these little organisms are like canaries in the coal mine for water quality. Learn how to identify them, what their presence (or absence) means, and how to report your findings.
This session is part of a broader mission at H2O Water Network: connecting everyday people with the tools and knowledge to protect their local environment. Biodiversity isn’t just an abstract idea—it’s something you can observe, support, and advocate for with every step you take in your watershed. This workshop offers a chance to build that connection, share what you find, and be part of a region-wide movement for cleaner water.
The Fall 2025 Confluence takes place Saturday, September 27th from 10 AM to 4 PM at Laurelville Retreat Center in Westmoreland County. This workshop is just one of many exciting opportunities to explore and learn, and we hope you’ll make it a priority. If your organization would like to participate in our Boatload of Knowledge tabling area, don’t forget to reach out and reserve your space.
Ready to experience biodiversity firsthand and walk away with practical skills? This session might just change how you see your local woods and waterways. From smartphone apps to stream critters, you’ll come away inspired—and informed.
