If your volunteers have ever floated past something on the river and wondered whether it was worth reporting, Three Rivers Waterkeeper is spending September teaching exactly that skill, on the water, in the park, and over cocktails.
Three Rivers Waterkeeper has four public events coming up: a boat ecotour on the Monongahela out of Elizabeth on September 12, a free presentation on data centers and their environmental footprint in Beaver County on September 15, a water quality training at Elizabeth Riverfront Park on September 25, and their annual fundraiser on October 16.
The September lineup
On Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, the group’s Waterkeeper boat departs the Elizabeth Monongahela River Boat Access for an ecotour focused on how to spot and report water pollution. On Tuesday, September 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Bradys Run Park in Beaver Falls, the Data Drains presentation covers the environmental impacts of AI and data center development proposals near Beaver County, along with how residents can weigh in through local advocacy. And on Friday, September 25, from 5 to 7 p.m., Train on the Trail at Elizabeth Riverfront Park walks participants through pollution identification and reporting procedures on the Monongahela.
Low commitment, high value
None of these require experience or gear, which makes them a good first step for newer volunteers who are not ready to adopt a monitoring site but want to be useful eyes on the water. The pollution reporting skills transfer directly to any stream in the basin: what a sheen means, what a discharge pipe should and should not look like, who to call, and what photos actually help an investigation.
Why it matters for the rest of us
Most pollution reports that lead to enforcement start with an ordinary person who knew what they were looking at. Sending even two or three of your members to a training like this multiplies your group’s coverage of your own watershed.
