In the first federal PFAS enforcement settlement of its kind, Chemours agreed to a $450 million package covering its Washington Works plant near Parkersburg, West Virginia. The deal includes a $22.5 million fine, roughly $60 million in emission reduction upgrades at the plant, and $280 million for clean drinking water supplies near affected facilities, plus $90 million over 15 years for PFAS emission reductions across multiple states.
The settlement requires pollution limits for forever chemicals and infrastructure upgrades to reduce toxic discharges into the Ohio River. WV Rivers Coalition and other groups call it a real step but warn the bigger fight is still ahead over pollution limits in the plant’s renewed water discharge permit.
