Our streams, wetlands, and rivers are vital ecosystems that support countless species and provide clean water for our communities. Unfortunately, these critical resources are once again under threat by the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) and its proposed Southgate extension. As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reviews an application for a Clean Water Act 404 permit for the 31-mile Southgate extension, it’s time for all of us to speak up. The risks of this expansion are simply too high, and we need your voice to make a difference.
The MVP Southgate extension would stretch from Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to Rockingham County, North Carolina, putting even more of our natural areas at risk. This extension could significantly harm endangered species, sensitive wetlands, and water quality in the region. MVP has already shown a troubling history of environmental violations. The construction of the main pipeline, completed last year, resulted in hundreds of water quality violations according to both state and federal regulators. Allowing the Southgate extension to proceed would only continue this trend of harm to our natural landscapes and communities.
What’s more concerning is that this permit application is being pushed forward even as other federal agencies await critical information from the pipeline developers. This lack of transparency is just one more reason why the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must take a step back and thoroughly assess the full scope of risks posed by this project before any further permits are granted.
Now is the time to act! The public has until May 30th to submit comments on this important issue. Your voice is needed to tell the Army Corps of Engineers that we cannot allow MVP to expand its footprint into more vulnerable areas. We cannot afford to risk the destruction of wetlands, pollution of waterways, or the degradation of habitats for wildlife that rely on these ecosystems to survive.
H2O Water Network stands with communities and advocates across the region in demanding that the MVP Southgate extension be rejected. We believe in protecting the environment and ensuring that water resources are preserved for generations to come. We urge you to speak up for the rivers and wetlands that are already facing significant pressures due to the ongoing MVP project.
To make your voice heard, please take a few minutes to sign the petition, which calls for the rejection of the MVP Southgate extension. Every signature helps show that we stand together in protecting our natural resources and holding corporations accountable for their environmental impact.
Don’t wait! The deadline to submit your comments is fast approaching, so take action today. Together, we can stop MVP from polluting our precious rivers and wetlands once again.
