Two Inches in an Hour: September Opens With Flash Floods Across Eight Counties

The region barely had time to dry out from its wettest August on record before September delivered its opening argument. Thursday evening storms on September 3 dropped up to two inches of rain in under an hour, flooding Route 51 in Pittsburgh, stranding concertgoers in Washington County, and putting eight southwestern Pennsylvania counties under flash flood warnings.

On the evening of September 3, 2026, severe thunderstorms flooded roads across Allegheny, Washington, Armstrong, Butler, Beaver, Fayette, Westmoreland, and Indiana counties, with flood warnings extending into the West Virginia panhandle. Saw Mill Run Boulevard flooded in Brookline and Carrick, and fans at the Pavilion at Star Lake sheltered in place. It came weeks after the region logged its wettest August since recordkeeping began in 1871.

An hour of rain, a night of trouble

The storms moved through fast but hit saturated ground that had nowhere left to put the water. One to two inches fell in short order, with more behind it, and the region’s flashiest drainages responded on cue. Saw Mill Run, the chronically flood-prone stream that shadows Route 51 through Pittsburgh’s southern neighborhoods, went over the road again. At Star Lake in Burgettstown, a sold-out concert crowd was told to shelter in place as water moved through the venue grounds. Winds gusting to 70 miles per hour northwest of Pittsburgh brought down trees and power lines, and high school football Friday openers were washed out across the area.

The pattern behind the storm
