Three days, three stretches of river
Each day covers a different reach of the Allegheny as it winds through Warren County, a stretch of river that carries a federal Wild and Scenic designation and some of the best smallmouth and walleye water in the basin. Volunteers work from canoes, kayaks, and support boats, hauling out whatever the river has collected since last year: tires, appliances, scrap metal, and the endless confetti of bottles and cans. The crew aims for roughly 40 volunteers on the water each day, which puts the full weekend’s need at about 120 people.

Thursday, September 17 runs from Buckaloons Recreation Area to the Wildwood Inn. Friday, September 18 continues from the Wildwood Inn down to Tidioute. Saturday, September 19 covers the water from Allegheny Outfitters back to Buckaloons. Registration is open at the crew’s website, and Warren County’s commissioners chipped in $500 toward the effort at their August meeting, the kind of small local government support that keeps a volunteer cleanup running year after year. When the last boat lands Saturday, the River Riot appreciation party takes over, with food, drinks, and live music for everyone who worked the weekend.
Why it matters for the rest of us
Everything that comes out of the river at Tidioute is something that never reaches Pittsburgh, and the River Roundup is also simply one of the best-run volunteer cleanup models in the basin: multi-day, boat-based, county-supported, and capped with a party that keeps people coming back.
